Dr. Dahl brings many years of experience, creative thinking, and ecological knowledge to bear in a number of areas. Some of his most essential expertise has to do with the practical aspects of conducting research or educational field trips “deep” into the forest.
- Evaluation of temperate forest, or wooded areas, with respect to appropriate management particularly concerning any threats posed by invasive plant species and long-term conservation aims;
- Expert input on the practical preparedness for fieldwork and travel in tropical forests. This is particularly pertinent with respect to: (a) Tropical diseases, their vectors, and appropriate clothing and prophylaxis; (b) Field equipment and food supplies; (c) Certain types of data collection equipment; (d) Advance evaluation of topography and vegetative cover;
- Educational field trips for children and young adults in Grades 4 – 12 particularly when camping is involved (so that students are actually living in the forest using low-impact camping techniques);
- Housing and management of captive populations of non-human primate, particularly with respect to the design and construction of appropriate housing, on one hand, and problems with reproduction, on the other.
Dr. Dahl has had specific experience working in the Comoro Islands (near Madagascar), Belize (Central America), the South-eastern hardwood forests of the United States, the temperate rainforest of the Olympic Peninsula. Washington, and a number of “Old Growth” forests in the United Kingdom.
